i agree with petzie about the whole cost thing, i just got a new dog last week. he was a stray.he is a beagle and i named him Taco. he loves my other little dog but my little dog HATES him. He has really good skin all over except where a collar would be there it is infected. he also has an infection in both ears. we got him medicine but it cost me so much money.i use almost all of the money that i saved up for a new drum set on him, but it was worth it because he is getting fatter cuz he dont hurt so bad and he likes eating. he was skinny. ill try to put a picture of him on my site.my other dog just got over from being sick too. he was throwing up and didnt eat for 5 days. he is better now but it cost us 200 bucks! you may think that it would be worth your money helping a dog, and it is, but they really cut into your budget. -weasle- www.geocities.com/aluminumdreamsad

I agree with Penny and Petzie. Mixies and purebreds both have there advantages and disadvantages.
Tell me about it. We rescues our 5 Great Danes from an expirimental lab so you can imagine they had some health problems. Plus they all came from puppy mills. Now they are cured of all their diseases, have a healthy diet and look much better. Our Newf was found on Lake Michigan when it was froze. She costed like $1000 in vet bills because she had been a stay and no one took care of her. She had things wrong with her eyes, nose, skin, paw pads, brocken leg that healed wrong, and she was pregnant. They gave us a huge discount on the vet bills though and now you would have never guessed she had all those problems.

yah, i would rather pay money than see a dog be sick or in pain, but that isnt a good job for everyone. not everyone can save the dogz from puppy mills and stuff. people should really really think about that. we also got a discont off our vet bills becuz our vet's kid goes to my moms preschool, so that was a big help.

We got a discount because between the Great Danes and the Newf it would have come to about $11,000. $2,000 for the Newf and about 6,000 for the Danes. So we saved $3,000.

I actually think dogs are equal in everything.. It seems to me that the dogs in Petshops need homes too. Even though they are more likely to be adopted, you should not just walk by and ignore it. Breeding purebreds is fine as well, my neighbor has a pure bred Austrailian Cattle Dog, and she is not diseased or anything. And she is highly loving to me. Anyway, he also had a mixed breed, which had to be put to sleep for various reasons. See? What does that tell you? Dogs are all the same when it comes to this. Just adopt something that jumps out at you, and one that you know you CAN take care of, and take into mind about how something can fit into your schedule, and make sure you have read up on that breed and know everything there is about it, so then you can have a happy, healthy pet. Don't get all in a tissy about me posting, it won't do any good. ;D

I think dogs are equal also but to many people don't think so and but from breeders leaving the shelter pups. But I won't buy from a pet shop because those dogs come from puppy mills and buying their dogs only promote it. They may need homes and their are people who buys the dogs but it's not helping. I feel bad for the dogs but in the long run I think it is best not to buy them because then maybe you can spare some of the dogs at the puppy mill another litter.

True. But what about the poor puppies that ARE in the puppy mill? What do we do about that? I want to do something to help them out of it all! I want a dog too!

Instead of buying pet store pups and helping the puppy mills I help the people who try to get rid of the puppy mills. In other words I donate a lot to the animal organizations that try to help puppy mill dogs.

You might think you are "rescuing" a dog buy getting one from a puppy mill. But that just means you're encouraging them to do more.
And if a dog was to cost me $11000 in vet bills, I'd just get it put down.

and you also have to agree with the fact that not all pets store dogz come from puppy mills, my friends dog had a litter of mixed breed pups, and she took em to the pet store and they sold them for her. some dogs are just from people who have too many puppies.

Some pet stores are nice. Even if the dogs are from other people or not from puppy mills chances are they still come from backyard breeders. They don't really try to better the breed causing lots of health problems.
You know how we found our Newf well she was a stray but she had former owners and they abused her. So they got in trouble for animal abuse and had to pay for all her vet bills until she had a clean bill of health. And the lab had to give some money for the Great Danes but we still had to pay a majority of it.

Words from liz: Mixies live longer, and are less prone to diseases. Ummm, that's not quite true. We have a curly Coated Retriever that's going to be 10 or 11 in a few months, and he's up and raring to go! The only thing he can't do so well is stretch. He tries to stretch to the ground, and he gets about 5 inches away from it. So he's no longer flexible... if he ever was. But mixies do live a long time. My mom had a German Shepherd/ Collie mix, and she lived till the age of 14 or 15. So they both live a long time.
