You might think you are "rescuing" a dog buy getting one from a puppy mill. But that just means you're encouraging them to do more. And if a dog was to cost me $11000 in vet bills, I'd just get it put down. No offence, and I'm not a dog owner so don't bite my head off. But if the dog was young, or middle aged, would you really rather put it down than make it healthy and give it a good lease of life? I know as a fact that most vets give a big dicount when the bill adds up to that much. Like our rabbit costs us about £50 a month for her check ups, nail clips and teeth something or other. < But we spoil her because she's old, and even when we couldn't afford that (about 5 years ago) we still took her on the fist friday of each month and had it all done. She's about 9 now. =] Anyways I wasn't trying to be harsh just making a point. If you don't agree fine. Don't bite my head off though.

I don't think anybody is going to bite your head off for that. I think that's an interesting debate there about mixies vs. purebreds. personally, I wouldn't buy a purebred because I don't like the show scene or the price tag, and I can get a dog that's just as loyal, just as cute and likely to be healthier and less inbred, from the shelter, for half the price. And that suits me just fine, because most breders will keep all puppies until they sell and not put them down!

Well, I look at it as, yes, you can pour all that money into the puppy, and then have him die anyway.
If it wasn't something that had a high survival rate and it didn't look like the odds were too good, I think I'd be merciful and put them to sleep too.
You wouldn't want to force a puppy with cancer to stay alive just because you wanted him. Especially not if he's going to be in pain for the rest of his life.
Sometimes you -can't- make them healthy again no matter what because it's a genetic defect or a chronic illness or some other horrible thing.
Just saying that I understand partly where Liz is coming from. I don't think I'd spend $11,000 in vet bills for a puppy that was just dying anyway.

I know it may sound harsh, but I think the sickly ones are supposed to die. I mean, in all honesty, if I had cancer and was in immense pain, I would rather die than be kept alive for everyone to be depressed over...

I don't think it is.
Some people cannot afford paying $11,000 and can't get assistance to afford it. Would it be more cruel to keep a dog alive when you can't afford to help it or just put it down?
She's not talking everyday vet bills either.

Okay. $11,000 in vet bills is a big deal but think about the puppy. Would you want someone to buy YOU and then just not try to save you by putting you down? I think its very unfair for the dog. I'd at least TRY and save the puppy the best I could. I have a small story related to this. I got my dog, Boomer, when he was about 4 months old. At 8 months, he was diagnosed with Hip Displasia. The vet told us the Boomer wouldn't make it to age 3 and that we should put him down right then and there. But my family refused to let him die without fighting for his life. You know how old he is now? He'll be NINE years old in October! Its amazing! Because we tried to save him the most we could, we gave him life again and he had the best life he could. All because we tried. If we had put him down right then at 8 months, I wouldn't have had the experience with him as my first dog and he wouldn't have had such a great life. Now my family finds out that Boomer not only has this hip disease, he has arthritis [sp?], an enlarged heart, bad breathing, and is deaf in one ear. And he's still alive and we're helping him. Until we know there's nothing more we can do, we won't put him down or make him suffer. We love him and that counts for something.
So thats my small sob story. XD I wanted to say it for some reason. Lol. So just think about giving the puppy a chance. =3

I actually wouldn't buy the sick puppy to begin with. (I don't buy dogs and cats since there are far too many who are in shelters.) Saving puppies is what gets them into the mess to begin with since for every sick and dying puppy you 'save' you're supporting the puppy mill creeps that he came from, so they'll force the mother to have -more- sick and diseased puppies for you to 'save'. And...poor Boomer. It's gotta be painful for the poor boy with all that wrong with him. I think we won't agree on a fundamental level because I can detach myself enough and ask myself; "Is it fair to them? Will they be in pain their entire lives? Will they be happy if not healthy? Will it be more cruel to keep them alive and doped on painkillers or to let them go? What will their life be like? Will they be able to run and play? Will they just be stuck in one place?" Which is key in actually deciding what's best for the animal and not what's best for you and your feelings.
