I used to know how to do this but I can't remember. I installed Petz and opened it and it worked fine. Then I transfered my old pet files into the Adopted Petz folder and now the game won't open. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Ok, I figured out it was because of corrupt pet files, I have about 4...is there anyway to fix them? Thanks.

They can't be fixed, but IF enough data is still in the file, a hexer might be able to clone them. Clones are NOT the original pets. They are petz fresh out of the Adoption Center that just look like the originals. Traits, memory, lineage, etc is all lost.

Okay, I know this is a really stupid question, but I've seen a million people run into this problem with "corrupted petz files". What exactly is a corrupted petz file?

All files are made of computer code. The code is "written" to a hard drives, cds, dvds. floppy disks, etc. Some files are what you might call information or data files. Programs are also computer code, but instead of being data or information, they read code from the data files and tell the computer what do do with the data ... how to use it. Pet files are data. They have all the information which describes a specific pet. Petz 5.exe, for example, is the program that runs Petz 5 and tells the computer how to use files such as clothes, toyz and petz.
Now, data is written and read electronically. Various things can happen to interrupt the reading or writing of code. A bug in a program, a computer crash, a power surge... these are things that can interrupt reading or writing of files. They can also damage a file that isn't being used. When a pet file is corrupted, that means that something has damaged the code. The program can't get the computer to use the file because part or all of the data (code) is damaged or missing.
A corrupted pet file can't be fixed because data is no longer available. If SOME data (code) is still in the corrupted file a hexer can extract it and create a new pet file. The only part (code) that a hexer can work with is hexidecimal code. Most of the file is in some computer programming code and can't be "hexed." Since the description of a pet is in hex code, that is the part that can be used to create a new pet that looks like the original pet. But the rest of data for memory, traits, etc. can't be retrieved.
I hope I made that clear... And, by the way, that was NOT a stupid question. I am always happy to see people trying to understand how their computers and programs work!

Okay, so basically it's just a pet's code that was messed up somehow and you can't open?
Cuz I was trying to figure out if a corrupted petz file could be the same thing as maybe...your game won't open because a puppy's file was somehow copied and put in the "adopted petz" folder. That's happened to me a lot, and so I don't want to post how to fix it when the person is asking about something completely different. =) And thanks for explaining that!
